Save The Beauty Of Ardmore (Co. Waterford)
Dear Sir,
I think it is a shame that building on the cliff headland is not prohibited! Last year one house was built there, this year another. From the coast guard to the lookout,
even to the tea flag and father O’Donnell’s well, open scenic wild beauty abounds. The Cliff Hotel area and St. Declan’s well too should be protected, for one
is a needed social institution, a fisherman told me, and the other is a symbol of celtic sacred land.
Traffic would overload the sandy cliff, and it could eventually slip into the sea. Every time I visit I see more barricades against erosion. It’s obvious that the cliff
needs support already since supporting structures have been built from the boat cove to the pier.
The seaside of Ardmore has a unique charm and an old culture – it nearly has a soul!
Cara O’Sullivan sang beautifully by the “coast guard” on June 21st this year, and there was a stupendous atmosphere.
I hope the local population and all the visitors from the cities nearby will make a joint effort to preserve the beauty of this landscape. I know money talks and it speaks loudest
when builders and land owners conspire, but I think it’s asinine to destroy Ardmore’s very capital with capitalism!
Freedom is important too, freedom to ramble this beautiful landscape, free spaces for recuperation and meditation, untouched nature, preserved wilderness.
Getting together and planning well and stopping eyesores before they happen would be a good idea. It is possible in my view to thrive and prosper without destroying the foundation
of the natural wealth this part of Eire offers. |
